LAURA FITZGERALD
ABOUT
"I found this note on the kitchen table this morning. I dislike writing about myself, so I presume I wrote this whilst sleeping.
Think of it all as a long holiday. Or rather; a speculative, investigative, experience. Push the rock up the hill. Draw. Embrace the Internet - mine it for diamonds. Read. Walk. Keep an open mind. Cast ideas in concrete.
Good luck,
Laura."
- Laura Fitzgerald
Laura Fitzgerald is an artist working in drawing, video and installation. Her work draws from a particular place, using scenarios within the landscape to produce queries into narrative forms.
Using documentary conventions with fictional scenarios, Fitzgerald attempts a deadpan delivery of what might be simply absurd stories that betrays the skill of never letting the impossibility of the story get in the way of its truth. This dynamic blend between the factual sense of place as a stage for Fitzgerald’s compelling fictions, and her use of recognisable tropes such as documentary, travelogue and the biographical, all weave complex levels of authenticity and coherence. The works to date move effortlessly between Laura’s genuine sense of romance for her landscapes and personal stories and her fascination with the internet and new digital interfaces. The work is further given a very unique register through Laura’s canny sense of humour. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2013 and was recipient of the SOLO Award 2013. She currently lives in both Inch, Co. Kerry and London.
